Phoenix Requiem - http://requiem.seraph-inn.com

Description

The Phoenix Requiem is a Victorian-inspired supernatural fantasy story about faith, love, death, and the things we believe in.

On a cold December night, a gentleman stumbles into the town of Esk, gunshot wounds leaving a trail of blood in the snow behind him. Despite making a full recovery at the hands of an inexperienced nurse - and deciding to make a new life for himself in the town - he is unable to escape the supernatural beings, both good and bad, that seem to follow him like shadows.

As they try to discover why, the nurse must question her beliefs and risk her own life in order to protect her family, her friends, and those that she loves.

I haven't read the entire series because I got bored. It annoys me that this comic seems to be consistently voted #1 on the top comics site when there are far superior comics out there.

On Writing:

Very poor. I got up to about page 55. Nothing has happened.

I didn't buy into the first interpersonal conflict of the story between mr. blond swordsman and incredibly-bland-girl. He wanted to help her; she insulted him for his concern. Then he ran off. I have no idea who he is. Never mentions what he role he plays or what relationship he has with the main female character, he's just a random guy who randomly wandered in and talked to her. Since I know nothing about the relationship between them, I have to confess I just lost interest in their interaction. Which was bland. Incidentally, if he is some sort of soldier, it's more believable that he might be concerned for her _safety_ when the strange man with a GUNSHOT wound wakes up.

So mr. maybe-a-soldier-guy gets so ticked off at the main female character he goes off to ruin his sword's edge by chopping at a beam. I read it all and I still have no idea why he was so upset. And I rather doubt a soldier would take such poor care of his weapon--the thing that he relies on for his life.

Although I don't know if he actually is a soldier, which is another major problem with the writing. Fifty pages in and the only personal detail I know about any of these people is that incredibly-bland-girl wants to be a doctor.

Then we're treated to an absurd situation. Two people play fighting with actual swords? Not taped, not dulled practice blades but actual swords and no armor? Right. Either you're saying something how absolutely stupid and reckless your characters are or you have no weapons training and can't be assed to do the research.

On Art:

The coloring is good. The actual art is... meh. I was turned off by the occasional bobblehead and the characters don't have a sense of 'weight' to them. Main female character is so visually bland that... meh.

Layouts are confusing. Action is flat and boring and not always clear.

On Website:

It's a website.

Overall:

Bad.

I find the art of this comic quite outstanding. The backgrounds are wonderfully detailed, atmospheric and remniscent of a psuedo-victorian winter in a semi-Russian, semi-Eastern European style. One quite expects to see hungry wolves prowling the forests (and maybe a flash of Beauty and the Beast? In the style and colouring, this web-comic strongly reminds me of the quality of art in Disney animation)
The clothes and fashion are wonderfully detailed, with true attention given to making the folds of cloth fall in a realistic and subtle way.
My only gripe about the art, per se, is that the characters faces - with the notable exception of our erstwhile police character - are quite lacking in expression. They smile, yes. They frown, mais oui! But there is a spark missing that ends up leaving the characters looking a tad wooden.
In all, though, I would give the art of this webcomic an 8.5 out of 10. Truly outstanding.

Writing-wise, however, I was not so impressed. I find the story drags, with too many talking heads and not enough solid content. The characters have little with which to characterise them, and I find myself secretly rooting for the policeman when he calls Jonas (one of the MCs) out on the fact that - be it Jonas's fault or no - where he goes people die. Therefore is it not slightly callous to continue to frequent populated areas?
It is an interesting premise, but on a whole I find it hard to stay focussed on the main characters when there is little about them that makes me want to care what happens to them.
Also - a minor minor nitpick: Jonas is meant to be an aristocrat with an aristocratically aristocratic (presumably 'British upper class') way of speaking, right? Therefore it would be my humble suggestion that he should not say such things as: 'Cripes' 'Cor' 'Blimey' or other such cockney-isms. These are widely recognised as more working class colloquialisms.
So - all in all and in conclusion, the art is lovely but I find the story hard to engage with. It would appear that I am in the minority there.

This is a great, clever webcomic. The art is fantastic, the characters interesting, and the content great to follow. Hands down, this is one of the best webcomics around.

The art is very professional and offers a rare treat rarely seen in webcomics: beautiful backgrounds. The setting is very Victorian and does a good job keeping it authentic. Even the dialogue flows very naturally. The story is very intriguing and has a wonderful supernatural, mysterious vibe to it that keeps the reader interested. Overall a great read, I look forward to seeing how the story unfolds.
